Initially formed by childhood friends Kenji Ohshima, Kazuhide Takanashi and Shingo Kamoshita in their second year of junior high school, then called "The POPEYE." Hidemi Kujirai later joined them in the second year of high school, changing their name to THE BUDOKAN. In 1984, they won the main prize at the Columbia/For Life-hosted contest 'The Audition.' Made their major debut with Columbia on July 21, 1985.
